5 Things to do in Quarantine to Stay Sane!

So quarantine, though very important for everyone’s well-being, is far from easy; I know, since I’ve been going a little stir-crazy myself. If you’re feeling uninspired, tired, in a rut, bored, or just want something to pass the time, here are some solutions that will keep the crazies at bay and have you looking fly when this is all over.

1. Bleach/Tie Dye!

Have any T-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, etc. that are feeling a little basic? Try Tie-Dye! You could freehand it and do whatever you want, or look up techniques for different designs. Not only is it a fun and nostalgic activity for you and whoever you are socially isolating with, but it’s also a great way to add some color to your wardrobe.

Or maybe you want to subtract some color? Try your classic tie dye techniques with bleach! Make sure to mix it with water first otherwise your clothes might disintegrate. There’s a trend going around where people have been bleaching half their jeans, which is a simple way to make a statement. I’ve also seen a few using the bleach to create designs, by hand painting whatever they want on their garments.

With tie-dye and bleach, no two pieces are ever the same, so it’s a great way to add your own signature flair to your clothes.

2. Hair pt 1: Cut it!

Okay, hear me out: you should cut your hair. It might seem intimidating, but cutting your own hair is soooo therapeutic, and a great way to switch up your look. You want bangs? Cut some! Short hair? No hair? Do it!! Now is a perfect time. There are tutorials all over the internet for whatever style you could think of. One look that has really been catching my eye lately is the mullet. Let’s face it, modern mullets are hot, AND in.

3. Hair pt 2: Color it!

Alright, if you don’t want to cut your hair, color it! You might not be able to make a trip to your local beauty supply store, but you can always order whatever supplies you may need online. I’ve seen a lot of people experimenting with some bold colors lately: bright pinks, oranges, blues, etc. And you don’t need to dye your whole head to make a statement. Look at Dua Lipa, for example: blonde on top, black underneath. So simple, yet eye-catching and super chic. Or channel Y2K with some chunky highlights, and maybe add some color to make it more modern (remember when Avril Lavigne had black lowlights?? I die for that look). Not to mention dying a streak or two is always cute. For those with short hair--don’t fret. I’ve also seen people bleaching their buzzcuts, and then using hair dye to draw whatever they please: flames, smiley faces, Hello Kitty, doesn’t matter. It’s gonna look cool no matter what you desire.

4. Try embroidery!

Embroidery can spice up any article of clothing. You can look up tutorials or patterns to follow, or just free-hand it! Adding some embroidery to your jeans, jackets, backpacks, hoodies, shoes, etc. is an easy way to show your originality. Once you know how, the embroidering possibilities are endless. For those of you scared of needles, try some iron on patches! They’re pretty cheap online and will still add the personal flare you're looking for.

5. Upcycle some old clothes

Look through your closet -- do you have anything ill-fitting? Frumpy? Maybe a little outdated? Anything you wouldn’t mind experimenting with? Try making something new out of it! Don’t be afraid to crop, sew, or tamper with it. If you weren’t going to wear it anyways, then you have nothing to lose! It’s easier than it appears, and there’s tons of resources online to give you ideas and then figure out how to execute them. Get those creative juices flowing! Think about materials. If something has an amazing pattern, texture, or color, transform it so that element can shine. This can be learned through online tutorials, or use a fabric pattern (which can also be found online!). I know not everyone has access to a sewing machine, but there are alternatives like fabric glue--and for small-scale projects, even hot glue can do the trick. The possibilities are truly endless: for example, I have a friend who has been cutting up old skirts and turning them into headbands and scrunchies. I’ve seen people turning dresses into tops, skirts, and bags, and even turning old towels into hats. Some have even found blankets laying around the house and turned them into pants. No matter your aesthetic or style, upcycling always brings lots of personality to your wardrobe.

I hope this little list can help with some boredom and bring you a little joy in these crazy times. I know fashion may not be the first thing on everyone's minds at the moment, but let's not forget about all the beauty that remains in the world, and there is so much beauty in self-expression, no matter what that may be. Stay safe, stay inside, and stay healthy, my loves.
