Headass straight outta London, Curriegoat (Denzel) is the hottest artist on the streets. Originally from Birmingham, a city north of London, he moved to pursue dreams of graphic design. He currently works as a graphic designer, while also running an art studio directly from his bedroom. His work hits different for real. Most commonly found painting one of ones on pants, he depicts intricately designed mythological characters.
He has always loved mythology and it shows in his work as he has painted a myriad of famous characters from Cerberus the three headed dog to more abstract Tibetan masked deities. Even with the major cultural differences in the characters he paints, Curriegoat stays consistent with his art style, self titled: popcorn horror.
Popcorn horror is usually used to describe a horror B-movie that is a thrill to watch. I love this title, it perfectly describes his process and outcome. Working straight out of his bedroom, he is low budget, but the outcome of his work speaks volumes about his skill as an artist. Saying it is a thrill to look at is an understatement.
He often publishes videos, either on instagram or his youtube channel, showcasing his painting process and they are hypnotizing. He often starts with a stencil or sketch and begins painting immediately. He builds up his piece one layer of paint at a time, starting with the basic colors and adding details and shadows one color at a time. His style is defined by clean cut intricate details of contrasting colors.
He is incredibly skilled with his use of shadows and color theory. This piece, for example, only uses four colors (red, black, white, grey), but an incredible amount of detail is portrayed; and that is the beauty of his work. Intricacy and precision creating the illusion of perfection.
This all comes from his eye for quality. Curriegoat calls out, in an ironic manner, the incredible pressure and power from the opinion of critics saying:
“People have an eye for quality, which is very high. But most people don’t have the ability to recreate that same quality”
Fuck the critics, if you don’t like my mans work do it yourself.
Denzel seems more motivated on an individual level than many other artists. He does not often do collaborations, and finds most of his inspiration from internal forces. Growing up he did not have many role models.
“I never had any. I just wanted to be the best version of me fuck everyone else tbh.”
So many artists these days stay dickriding, I see all you clowns out there screen printing Naruto characters on tees, so it's like a big fat breath of fresh air to see some originality. People fuck with it too. Curriegoat is turning his work into a full on movement.
He certainly wasn’t the first bloke to pick up a paint brush and doodle some crazy shit on a pair of jeans, but he is ahead of the class in terms of marketing his work. Curriegoat currently has his stencils and paints online for the public’s use of emulating his work. So let's see all those critics get to work.
This is kinda genius. Clowns online are breaking their necks to copy his shit, and he’s taking full advantage of it. For every shitty jean custom someone else does online he gains ten followers.
This mans is hilarious. He busted out the custom jeans with the fly-knit multicolor fazos. Blackblurrrrr (5 r’s for the real ones) over hear with the serrated teeth joints as well, oh my.
Curriegoat is nice alright, he isn’t a dick. He loves his community and he does everything he can to get them invested and involved. He is incredibly humble too, saying
“Nothing separates me from other artists”
Even though he is clearly more talented than 90% of the heads on instagram. Overall one of my favorite guys.
Keep your eye out for him in the future, do it for Perime please. In the time to come, He wants to focus and streamline his creations to make a comprehensible story between his pieces. This would be a dream come true. His pieces already carry so much substance, I would be amazed to see what he could do with an overarching story tying them all together.
He also has more screen printed general release pieces on the way as well, following the success of his first crew neck, so keep your eyes wide open.
That’s all for today, I got a sociology midterm in 20 mins so wish me luck.
I love you Curriegoat, when we become friends I’ll call you by your formal name Denzel.
Until then all love XOXO.
Samuel
